According to EN 81-1 (clause 9.1.3), rope elevators must use at least 2 ropes. Usually 4 to 12 ropes are used, together with devices such as sheaves. EN 81-1 (clause 9.5.1) calls for an automatic device to equalize rope tension.
The most important case is the spring-based one described in detail in EN 81-1 (clause 9.5.2). The design trend in elevators is moving away from the 1:1 arrangement using a few thick ropes and large sheaves, and the 2:1 arrangement using many small-diameter ropes on small sheaves is now increasing; the main reasons are space constraints and cost.
